Stowe Manor

Stowe Manor is a 1920’s southern mansion in Belmont, North Carolina. During this historical period, “cotton was king” and textile manufacturing was a booming industry strengthening small town economies all over the south. Stowe Manor’s owners were founders in Belmont’s manufacturing and banking industry – entrepreneurs of the first order.

The Manor house has approximately 8500 square feet of heated living space, 4500 of which is on the first floor of the house. The second floor of the house was constructed originally for six bedrooms with a seventh bedroom as a live-in employee’s bedroom.
Six large “public” rooms exist on the first floor of the house as well as two large rooms that were used as bedrooms in the heyday of its use as a residence.

The house was originally constructed in 1922 and just prior to occupancy it burned to the ground. It was rebuilt in the year 1924 and was occupied by the S.P. Stowe family until 1967. As preserved through the eyes of a child, Sam Stowe, grandson of S.P. Stowe recalls many of the grand parties and lavish holiday gatherings. Inspired by the weight of those memories and a genuine concern for preservation of the magnificent architectural design during this period, Sam and his wife Martha proposed a rehabilitation of the house to the point it could be used as a wedding reception and special event facility. This rehabilitation occurred in 1994 in conjunction with a fundraiser for the capital campaign for the East Gaston YMCA. A local designer, Sally Stowe Abernathy, worked hand in hand with Martha Stowe and a team of designers to create a unique and memorable atmosphere.
